Medals at NAGA Paris

Scott Sperling and Jon Nicholson travelled to France to compete in the NAGA Europe tournament in the Levallois suburb of Paris. Scott won Silver in the Adult Mens Blue Belt Welterweight Gi and Gold in the Adult Mens Intermediate Welterweight ADCC No-Gi. Jon won Silver in the Mens Adult Blue Belt Flyweight Gi and Gold in the Adult Mens Intermediate Flyweight ADCC No-Gi.

Gold at Rickson Cup

Axis UK instructor Philip Yeomans recently returned to Cambridge from a trip to Japan where he trained at the Axis international headquarters in Tokyo and then competed in the prestigious Rickson Gracie Cup. Philip took Gold in the Black Belt Middle-Heavyweight division.

A number of Jiu Jitsu's most famous competitors were in attendence including other black belt category winners Andre Galvao, Guilherme and Rafael Mendes and Bruno Frazatto.

South East Open Medals

On October 2nd an Axis competition team travelled to Rayleigh in Essex for the South East Brazilian Jiu Jitsu Open, with 10 competitors entering and winning 10 medals (5 Golds, 3 Silvers and 2 Bronze) including Golds in both the White and Blue belt Absolute (open-weight) categories.

Getting the day off to a good start, Matt Halsey won Silver in the Featherweight White belt Adult, fighting in a younger age group than usual. David Bloxham took double Gold, winning both the White belt Medium Heavyweight Masters and the White belt Absolute. Andy Salmon, Kevin Sakaldip and Carl Rein won Gold, Silver and Bronze in the White belt Heavyweight Adult, with Andy Salmon also winning Silver in the White belt Absolute.

Ben Wigley won Gold in the Blue belt Absolute winning a tough series of fights against much heavier opponents after already competing and winning Bronze in the Blue belt Lightweight Adult category. Jon Nicholson won Gold moving up a weight to the Blue belt Featherweight Adult.

"Fundamentals" Class

Wednesday night classes are now dedicated to basic Jiu Jitsu techniques. It's recommended that beginners make sure not to miss these if possible as these classes will cover the basic techniques that it's important to know before moving on to more advanced techniques and positions. Experienced students should be coming to improve and refine their understanding and technique.

Axis Medals at Brighton Open

Competitors from Axis were successful again at this years Grab & Pull Brighton BJJ Open. Mateusz Ruszkowski won Gold in the Mens Adult Heavyweight White Belt division, in his first ever tournament. Afnan Saeed and Andy Salmon both won Silver medals, in the busy Mens Adult Lightweight White Belt and Mens Adult Medium-Heavyweight White Belt divisions respectively.

Well done to everyone who took the trip down from Cambridge to compete.
